There are many incredible mountains and volcanoes to hike in Ecuador, but if you are looking for a bit quicker way to go 2.5 km to reach 4100 meters above sea level, you can try the famous cable car in Quito called the TelefériQo. In just 10 minutes, this cable car will take you up the side of the Rucu Pichincha volcano to gaze in wonder at the metropolis below you. With luck in the early morning, on a clear day, you can even see the peaks of up to 6 other volcanoes, including Cotopaxi and Cayambe. Just do not forget to bring warm clothing and layers, as the weather is unpredictable at this altitude!
Though the list of things to enjoy in Quito is not small, this has to be one of the top must-do activities, because there is no better way to truly witness the grand expanse of Quito and the neighboring valley towns than by looking down at them from this amazing height. There is also plenty to do once at the top – from hiking the rest of the volcano to its peak (around 4-5 hours round trip), to horseback riding, downhill biking, or simply enjoying the incredible views from the on-site cafes or from a giant swing set – which makes for the perfect photo opportunity. If you want to feel like you have “touched the sky” as the TelefériQo slogan says, this is a top recommended activity for all ages.
